When Bruttell Roofing Inc. of Oak Park, Mich., won the bid to put a new roof on the Guardian Building in Detroit, there was both delight and concern. "We were pleased to win the contract." says Bruttell sales manager Jon Jacobson, "but at the same time we were concerned about tearing off an old 8-inch built-up roof and lowering debris 34 floors to the street. We didn't want to do anything that might cause damange to this architectural treasure."
Why do roofs fail? Now that's a good question. Why can't we just assume that a roof will wear like masonry? Take the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris for example, hasn't the masonry there been holding up for hundreds of years? And another thing, if we can put a man on the moon...
