Live Roof
A living roof is exactly how it sounds, alive. Live Roof is a roofing system installed by Bruttell that combines plant life and soil to provide the only true “green” roofing system. The plants and soil that grow in smaller roof modules are combined to form a roofing system of plant life that lives and grows as nature intended it to. It is a living, breathing system that performs the roofing functions needed to protect everything underneath. The system absorbs the rain water like a sponge, reducing run off by over 90% and also filtering pollutants as it drains through. That is what Earth’s vegetation was designed to do for us and we often forget how important plant life is to our survival! The roofing system also effectively keeps the roof cooler than the outside temperatures. A “cool roof” is a green roof. It can also reduce noise pollution in the building by up to 40 decibels. This is great for buildings near airports, trains, industry, etc. A happy, focused workplace is a productive one.
Installing a Live Roof over your existing roof requires a certified installer and can be done very quickly. A Live Roof, however is not an option to every structure because it weighs approximately 28 pounds per square foot. This exceeds many structures weigh load limits. An architect or engineer may need to be contacted for assistance. The material for the system is also more expensive as compared to other roofing systems, but it reduces maintenance costs significantly. Irrigation may be needed in hot dry climates, but often is not an issue.
